What This Actually Means
In plain language — no jargon

The fuel composition sensor is sending a signal that's too high, like a volume knob turned up too loud. The ECU can't properly detect whether you're using ethanol blend or pure gasoline.

Symptoms You May Notice
3 known symptoms for this code
Check Engine Light illuminated
Rough idle or hesitation during acceleration
Decreased fuel economy

Embedded Systems Insight
What the ECU/ECM is actually computing

The fuel composition sensor (also called an ethanol content sensor) measures the percentage of ethanol in the fuel by analyzing the fuel's dielectric properties. The ECM expects a voltage signal within a specific range; when the signal exceeds the maximum threshold, it triggers P0180. The sensor helps the engine adjust fuel injection and ignition timing for different fuel blends.

Voltage & Parameter Thresholds

Parameter Normal Range Fault Condition
Sensor Output Voltage 0.5–4.5 volts Above 4.8 volts or open circuit
Ethanol Content Detection 0–100% ethanol blend Signal exceeds maximum calibration range

Diagnostic & DIY Fix Guide
Check these in order — from cheapest to most complex
1
Fuel composition sensor connector
Disconnect and reconnect the sensor plug to remove corrosion and ensure proper contact.
2
Fuel composition sensor wiring harness
Inspect the wiring for damage, exposed copper, or moisture; repair or replace damaged sections.
3
Fuel composition sensor
Replace the sensor if connector and wiring are intact, as internal failure causes high voltage output.
