P0183
Fuel Temperature Sensor A Circuit Low Input
Powertrain Fuel and Air Metering Fuel Temp Sensing 🟡 Moderate — Fix within a week
💬
What This Actually Means
In plain language — no jargon

The fuel temperature sensor is sending a signal that's too low, like a thermometer stuck on cold when it should read warm. The engine computer can't properly adjust fuel injection timing and density because it doesn't know the actual fuel temperature.

Symptoms You May Notice
3 known symptoms for this code
Check Engine Light illuminated
Poor fuel economy or rough idle
Difficulty starting in cold conditions

Embedded Systems Insight
What the ECU/ECM is actually computing

The ECU monitors voltage output from the fuel temperature sensor circuit, expecting a voltage range that corresponds to normal fuel temps. When voltage drops below minimum threshold, the ECU detects an open circuit, short to ground, or sensor failure and triggers P0183.

Voltage & Parameter Thresholds

Parameter Normal Range Fault Condition
Fuel Temp Sensor Voltage 0.5–4.5V Below 0.1V or open circuit
Fuel Temperature 32–212°F (0–100°C) Signal indicates <-40°F or circuit failure

Diagnostic & DIY Fix Guide
Check these in order — from cheapest to most complex
1
Wiring and connectors
Inspect fuel temperature sensor connector for corrosion, loose pins, or water intrusion and clean or reseat as needed.
2
Fuel temperature sensor
Disconnect the negative battery terminal, locate the sensor on the fuel line or rail, and replace with OEM equivalent.
3
Wiring harness
Test sensor circuit continuity with a multimeter; if open, repair or replace damaged wiring between sensor and ECU.
