What This Actually Means
The vehicle's compass module (typically in the rearview mirror) is not communicating with the main computer system. It's like a walkie-talkie that stopped responding to calls.
Compass Module is not Responding
The vehicle's compass module (typically in the rearview mirror) is not communicating with the main computer system. It's like a walkie-talkie that stopped responding to calls.
The ECM continuously polls the compass module via CAN bus for directional data. The module should respond with heading information (N, S, E, W) within a set timeout window. If no valid response signal is received after multiple attempts, a communication fault is logged.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Compass Module Response Time | 0-500 milliseconds | No response or >1000 milliseconds |
| CAN Bus Signal Voltage | 2.5-3.5V | <0.5V or >5V |
Code U2013 is a low-severity fault. Your vehicle is generally safe to drive to a workshop for diagnosis. However, do not ignore it indefinitely — low-severity codes often indicate developing problems that become expensive if neglected. Book a diagnostic appointment within 2–4 weeks. If you notice any additional symptoms (rough running, power loss, unusual smells), treat it as higher priority.
Once the fault is repaired, U2013 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
