What This Actually Means
Your vehicle's communication network isn't getting a confirmation message back from the dashboard warning lights system. Think of it like sending a text message that never shows a 'delivered' status.
SCP (J1850) Lack of Acknowledgment for Telltales
Your vehicle's communication network isn't getting a confirmation message back from the dashboard warning lights system. Think of it like sending a text message that never shows a 'delivered' status.
The ECU sends J1850 SCP bus commands to activate telltale lights (check engine, oil pressure, etc.) and waits for an acknowledgment response. When no acknowledgment is received within the expected timeframe, the ECU logs this communication fault. The system monitors bus voltage levels and timing of handshake signals.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| SCP Bus Acknowledgment Response Time | 10-100 milliseconds | No response or >200ms delay |
| SCP Bus Voltage Level | 5V logic signal | <2V or >6V indicating signal integrity loss |
Code U1736 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, U1736 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
