What This Actually Means
Your vehicle's main computer can't talk to the rear seat entertainment system, like a broken phone line between two offices. The entertainment module isn't responding to communication attempts from the vehicle's network.
Lost Communication With Rear Seat Entertainment Control Module
Your vehicle's main computer can't talk to the rear seat entertainment system, like a broken phone line between two offices. The entertainment module isn't responding to communication attempts from the vehicle's network.
The main ECU periodically sends diagnostic messages to the rear seat entertainment module over the CAN bus network and expects acknowledgment responses within a set timeout window. If no response is received after multiple attempts, the ECU logs a communication loss fault. The module must handshake successfully within 2-3 seconds of power-up.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| CAN Bus Response Time | 50-200ms acknowledgment | No response or timeout >3 seconds |
| Module Heartbeat Signal | Present every 100-500ms | Missing or irregular heartbeat |
Code U0196 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, U0196 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
