What This Actually Means
The transmission's overdrive band isn't releasing properly, like a stuck clutch that won't disengage. This prevents the transmission from shifting out of overdrive or operating in lower gears when needed.
Overdrive Band Failed Off
The transmission's overdrive band isn't releasing properly, like a stuck clutch that won't disengage. This prevents the transmission from shifting out of overdrive or operating in lower gears when needed.
The ECM monitors overdrive band apply/release solenoid voltage and transmission fluid pressure during shift commands. It detects when the band fails to release by comparing actual gear ratios (via speed sensors) against commanded gear positions. If the band stays engaged when it should release, the ECU triggers this fault.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Overdrive Band Solenoid Command | 0.5-4.5V with proper response | No pressure change or stuck at high pressure |
| Transmission Gear Ratio | Matches commanded gear within 0.2 seconds | Remains in overdrive despite release command |
Code P1770 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, P1770 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
