Intake Air Heater A Circuit Open
Powertrain Fuel and Air Metering Cold Start Air Heating 🟡 Moderate — Fix within a week
💬
What This Actually Means
In plain language — no jargon

The intake air heater circuit has an open connection, like a broken wire in a heating element. The engine control unit can't complete the circuit to warm incoming cold air for better combustion.

Symptoms You May Notice
3 known symptoms for this code
Hard starting in cold weather
Rough idle after cold start
Reduced fuel economy in cold conditions

Embedded Systems Insight
What the ECU/ECM is actually computing

The ECM monitors voltage and current draw through the intake air heater relay circuit. It expects to see voltage drop across the heater element when activated and detects an open circuit when current cannot flow. If voltage remains high without current draw, the fault is triggered.

Voltage & Parameter Thresholds

Parameter Normal Range Fault Condition
Heater circuit current draw 5-15 amps when activated Below 0.5 amps or no measurable current
Heater element voltage 11-14V applied during operation Full battery voltage with no voltage drop

Diagnostic & DIY Fix Guide
Check these in order — from cheapest to most complex
1
Intake air heater relay
Locate and replace the relay in the engine bay fuse/relay box, typically a 5-pin component.
2
Wiring harness and connectors
Inspect and repair any corroded or disconnected wires leading to the intake heater element.
3
Intake air heater element
If wiring and relay test good, replace the heater element itself located in the intake manifold or air intake.
