What This Actually Means
Your engine's idle control system is having intermittent connection problems, like a loose wire in a lamp that flickers on and off. The ECU can't reliably adjust air intake at idle, causing unstable engine behavior.
Idle Air Control Circuit Intermittent
Your engine's idle control system is having intermittent connection problems, like a loose wire in a lamp that flickers on and off. The ECU can't reliably adjust air intake at idle, causing unstable engine behavior.
The ECU monitors the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or electronic throttle control for proper response to idle commands. It expects consistent voltage and position feedback within acceptable ranges. When signals drop out intermittently or fall outside thresholds, the fault sets.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| IAC Position Signal | 0-255 counts, steady response | Intermittent dropouts or erratic variation |
| Idle RPM Stability | ±25 RPM of target | Swings >100 RPM or loss of control signal |
Code P0518 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, P0518 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
