What This Actually Means
The engine computer detected that cylinder 12's fuel injector circuit is receiving too much voltage, like a water valve stuck wide open flooding the line. This prevents proper fuel control and engine operation.
Cylinder 12 Injector Circuit High
The engine computer detected that cylinder 12's fuel injector circuit is receiving too much voltage, like a water valve stuck wide open flooding the line. This prevents proper fuel control and engine operation.
The ECU monitors the injector control circuit voltage and current during activation. When voltage remains abnormally high after the injector should close, or the circuit resistance is too low, the ECU detects an open or short condition in the wiring or injector driver.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Injector Circuit Voltage | 0-5V when inactive, 12-14V during pulse | Sustained voltage above 14.5V or failure to drop to 0V |
| Injector Circuit Current | 0.5-4 amps during activation | Excessive current draw or open circuit detection |
Code P0296 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, P0296 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
