What This Actually Means
The engine control unit detected that cylinder 6's fuel injector is receiving too much electrical voltage, like a faucet stuck in the open position. This prevents the injector from controlling fuel delivery properly.
Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit High
The engine control unit detected that cylinder 6's fuel injector is receiving too much electrical voltage, like a faucet stuck in the open position. This prevents the injector from controlling fuel delivery properly.
The ECM monitors the voltage and current flow through the cylinder 6 injector circuit. During normal operation, the injector receives a controlled pulse of voltage to open briefly. A 'high' fault occurs when the voltage exceeds the normal operating threshold, indicating an open circuit, shorted wiring, or failed injector driver.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Injector Circuit Voltage | 0-14.5V with controlled pulse timing | >14.5V sustained or circuit resistance too low |
| Injector Resistance | 12-16 ohms typical | <8 ohms or open circuit (infinite resistance) |
Code P0278 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, P0278 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
