What This Actually Means
Your engine's air flow sensor is reporting less air intake than normal, like a clogged straw limiting how much you can drink. The engine computer thinks there's insufficient air entering, disrupting the fuel-air balance.
Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input
Your engine's air flow sensor is reporting less air intake than normal, like a clogged straw limiting how much you can drink. The engine computer thinks there's insufficient air entering, disrupting the fuel-air balance.
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures intake air volume and sends a voltage signal to the ECM. The ECM expects a specific voltage range based on engine load and RPM. When the signal falls below the minimum threshold, the fault is triggered.
| Parameter | Normal Range | Fault Condition |
|---|---|---|
| MAF Sensor Voltage | 0.5-7.0 volts (varies by load) | Below 0.5 volts or erratic signal |
| Air Mass Flow Rate | 3-7 grams/second at idle | Below 2 grams/second |
Code P0102 is a moderate fault. You can generally drive to a workshop, but avoid long trips or high-load driving (motorway, uphill towing) until it is diagnosed. If the code keeps returning after clearing, or if you notice the symptoms listed above worsening, do not delay professional diagnosis. Many moderate codes have multiple possible root causes — a mechanic with live OBD data can identify the exact fault more efficiently than part-by-part trial and error.
Once the fault is repaired, P0102 can be cleared using any OBD-II scanner. Connect the scanner, navigate to "Clear Codes" or "Erase DTCs," and confirm. The check engine light turns off immediately.
The code will return if the root cause was not actually fixed. The ECM re-detects the fault within 1–3 drive cycles and sets the code again.
