Wiper Hi/Low Speed Not Switching
Body Chassis/Safety Wiper System 🟢 Low — Fix at next service
💬
What This Actually Means
In plain language — no jargon

Your wiper motor isn't switching properly between high and low speed settings. It's like a fan that gets stuck on one speed and can't adjust up or down.

Symptoms You May Notice
3 known symptoms for this code
Wipers only work on one speed setting
Wipers fail to respond to speed control lever changes
Wipers may run continuously or not run at all

Embedded Systems Insight
What the ECU/ECM is actually computing

The ECU monitors the wiper motor control circuit to verify it can switch between high-speed and low-speed relay states. It detects voltage changes when the driver moves the wiper stalk, expecting the motor to change speeds accordingly. A fault occurs when the ECU commands a speed change but detects no corresponding motor response.

Voltage & Parameter Thresholds

Parameter Normal Range Fault Condition
Wiper Motor Speed Transition Motor responds within 500ms of speed command No motor speed change detected after command sent
Control Circuit Voltage 12V high-speed relay / 5V low-speed relay engaged Voltage remains constant; relay fails to switch

Diagnostic & DIY Fix Guide
Check these in order — from cheapest to most complex
1
Wiper stalk connector
Clean and reseat the wiper control stalk electrical connector at the steering column to restore signal contact.
2
Wiper motor relay
Locate and replace the wiper motor relay in the fuse/relay box; a stuck relay prevents speed switching.
3
Wiper motor assembly
Replace the entire wiper motor if internal gearbox or speed-switching mechanism is damaged.
